Should fun be the goal of wrestling? Should fun be the reason we're even out there? Two ways to ask the same question. On Episode 28 of the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast, Daryl Weber and his brother Lee look back at their own experiences growing up wrestling in Iowa and wrestling at the University of Iowa to determine where the "fun" factor should be within wrestling.

Having fun in wrestling is often attributed to the wrestlers who win big, score points and entertain, but not everyone has that kind of ability, especially right off the bat. Is preaching the "fun" factor a deterrent or should it be harnessed in a different fashion? When kids quit, they used excuses like "it isn't fun anymore." Is that a product of what they're led to believe the sport is or is it just an excuse to quit when something gets too hard or frustrating?

The final show in the four-part series with Daryl Weber's coaching secrets is rooted in building the right culture. We will tie in the past three episodes and again works on moving past the stresses involved with coaching high school sports and working with parents, athletes and administrators.

When it comes to coaching, techniques get shared the world over. When it comes to mental preparation and certain tricks of the trade, that's when coaches start becoming a little more guarded about what they know and what they're willing to tell others.

This four-part series will focus on some of those "trade secrets" in working on getting more out of yourself as a coach and more out of your athletes. Some are philosophical, some are carved out of years of practice.

Part 3 of this series centers around a debate with parents. Do parents belong in the practice room if they aren't active coaches? NCAA champion and Hall of Fame high school coach Daryl Weber talks about his experiences in dealing with parents in the room and some positive roles they can play.

Episode 22 of the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast focuses on teaching the top position with coach Daryl Weber.

Warm Up:
In practices with emphasis on the top position any drills we incorporate into the warm up or quick drills segments will focus on the neutral or bottom position.

Drills
Drills in the top position will focus on learning to transition from one hold to the next, mastering forward pressure and controlling the bottom wrestler with handles and breakdowns. This may be within a series or between series that compliment each other and make for easy setups. Controlling the bottom wrestler with technical detail and pressure are a heavy focus in these drills.

Techniques:
Techniques will be introduced as a part of a series. Typically the most basic technique will be introduced and then others added to address common defensive tactics the bottom wrestler may present.

Sparring & Situational:
Sparring is a great way to develop the chain wrestling skills and the constant pressure needed to be effective from the top position. As quickly as possible their needs to be a strong emphasis on starting in live situations to develop the true feel and skills needed to dominate from the top position. Sparring and situational wrestling mixed with teaching is a great way to master the top position.

Episode 21 of the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast focuses on teaching the bottom position with coach Daryl Weber.

Warm Up Drills:
Outside of your normal calisthenics we will insert solo drills that focus on one of three things. The first are base drills that will focus on properly building the base position from various other positions. Second will be solo drills focusing on the technical actions used in the bottom position with a heavy emphasis on explosion off the whistle. Third we will use solo drills focusing on chaining holds together.

Drills:
In practices focusing on the bottom position we will utilize drills in various portions of practice. Their will be two main types of drills. The first is our Master Skill Set drill. This will focus on performing high intensity repetitions of the most crucial offensive techniques in bottom wrestling. Two elements that will be heavily incorporated and emphasized will be chain wrestling and explosion. The second type of drill will focus on developing a strong base position from the the feet, one knee and both knees.

Offensive Techniques:
This category will include such things as our Stand Up, Sit Out, Switch and Roll series. These techniques are meant to attack from the bottom position. The best strategy from the bottom position is to use these series along with explosion and chain wrestling to take control in the bottom position and earn your Escape or Reversal as quickly as possible.

Reactionary Techniques:
A large part of success on the bottom position is understanding how to stay out of the top wrestlers offensive holds and clear them. The techniques in this category are essential and the must be drilled like any other. The sooner you can develop the muscle memory needed to clear wrist controls, claws, legs etc.. the more confidence you’ll gain in the bottom position.

Sparring & Situational:
Sparring is especially important in the development of the bottom position. Putting wrestlers in specific situations and having the top wrestler resist around 75% will allow the bottom wrestler to work the techniques and give them a realistic view at the same time. This will force them to chain holds together, maintain a solid base position and execute the proper techniques. Mixing in live scenarios as well will help to cross these skills over to live match instincts as well.

On Episode 14 of the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast, NCAA champion and Hall of Fame high school coach Daryl Weber will attack the issues about recruiting new athletes into the sport and more importantly, retaining them so they become more than just someone who "wrestled" once upon a time.

Coach Weber points out four areas of retention

  • How do I get them out for the sport?
  • How do I keep them out and retain them?"
  • How do I get them to buy in, work hard and listen?
  • How do I make my wrestling program popular so I can built a championship culture

Ever since starting AttackStyleWrestling.com I have has Martial Artists of all different disciplines signing up for advice on learning wrestling or teaching wrestling.

Most are either instructors that wish to teach wrestling skills more effectively at their gyms and give their students a better experience or they are athletes from all backgrounds wanted to integrate wrestling skills into their existing skills and expand their combative arsenal.

It has been exciting to see so many people of different backgrounds come to our site for information and instruction. But my biggest fear has always been that I would overload people new to our sport by dumping too much information on their lap.

That’s why I have taken it upon myself to reach out to some of the best developmental wrestling coaches that have a background in MMA both as competitors and coaches.

One of the first people I reached out to Coach Mark Strickland. I consider Coach Strickland to be one of the best developmental coaches in the country and he has been involved in MMA as a competitor and coach for nearly 10 years.

Check out the recent podcast I hosted with Coach Mark Strickland and learn more about his past, how he has come to be one of the best wrestling coaches for youth and high school wrestlers in the nation as well as:

  • #1 Thing wrestlers bring to MMA Practice… What Instructors love about wrestlers
  • What comes easy for wrestlers crossing over to MMA and how athletes from other disciplines can pick this up quick
  • The most important thing to keep in mind when teaching wrestling to martial artists of other disciplines
  • The most important skill to work on when learning wrestling for MMA and how to progress from there.
  • Benefits to having MMA athletes train in your wrestling practice.
  • Who is the hardest for even the highest level wrestlers to take down?
  • How quick wrestling for MMA can be learned if you focus on the right skills and have a good instructor
